Chapter Twenty-Seven: Iâll Be a Cheerleader
Emma
âDonât let your football teammates hear you say that.â I never thought Iâd live to see the day when Doug would prefer cheerleading over football.
âOr your fatherâ¦â A male voice drew our attention away from the excited football-player-turned-cheerleader.
âDad⦠youâre home early.â Doug straightened and maintained a stoic expression.
Mr. Wilcox stood on the stone path between our two homes, briefcase in one hand, suit coat draped over his other arm, white shirt untucked and tie loosened. He glanced around at the backyard full of cheerleaders. âAre you quitting football?â
âNo, Dad, Iâm not quitting football. The cheerleaders were just teaching me how to do a back handspring, and it was so much fun I compared it to a touchdown.â
âYou didnât tell your parents about helping out the cheerleaders?â I asked, already knowing the truth.
âNo, I hadnât had the chance to yet,â Doug stammered.
âWhat is it youâre helping them with?â Mr. Wilcox asked, still bewildered.
âNext Saturdayâs competition,â Doug said, his voice wavering as if a manifestation of his waning confidence.
âMr. Wilcox, heâs a really good cheerleader.â Preston stepped forward with confidence as if his declaration would help the situation.
âWho are you?â Dougâs dad cocked his head.
âIâm Preston Fox. Itâs nice to finally meet you.â Preston reached out to shake hands, but Mr. Wilcox merely glanced at Prestonâs outstretched hand and then back at his son.
âWhat is going on here?â
âDad, I can explain,â Doug started.
âI donât think I need an explanation. I think you need to stick to boys sports.â Mr. Wilcox turned slowly and walked toward his house without another glance at his son.
âDad, Iâm joining the cheer team,â Doug called to his dadâs back.
âI thought you just said you werenât quitting football.â Mr. Wilcox turned slowly and narrowed his eyes.
âIâm not. IâmâIâm gonna do both until football season is over.â
âAnd⦠after football season?â
âIâll be a cheerleader.â Doug gulped but held his chin up.
âAre you telling me youâre not playing basketball this winter?â Mr. Wilcox almost sounded as if he was going to cry. âAll these years of practicing and lessons and traveling teams and dedication to a sport you love? Youâre just going to throw it all away to wave pom poms in the air?â
âThatâs not what cheerleadingâs about, Dad. Itâs a real sport. And it takes skill and endurance.â
âThere are no guys on the cheer team. Thatâs a girlsâ sport.â
âPreston inspired me when he joined.â Doug looked over at Preston and smiled with admiration. âHeâs a really good gymnast and great at cheering and has gotten really good at stunting.â
âAre you trying to make some statement about yourââMr. Wilcox hesitated and almost choked when he continuedâ âpreferences.â
âDad, Iâm not gay,â Doug said. âI can join the cheer team without being gay. But⦠even if I was gay, I would hope you would love me no matter what.â Dougâs voice got soft at the end of his statement as if he was worried.
âSon, I will love you forever. But cheerleading is a girlsâ sport. By joining that team, youâre like one of the girls.
